Standard Recommendations – Anthony New York – Anthony Fresh 5

Anthony Fresh 5If your grooming regimen closely resembles my grooming regimen from approximately 10 years ago, you would probably agree it consists of the basics: soap, water, and body lotion. In my early 30s, I resolved myself to allocating the proper attention to my standard grooming routine and introducing a few upgrades to my bathroom flow. Moisturizers, exfoliating scrubs, cleansers balms, etc. were all married into my newly established lifestyle of hygienic care. Now, if you find yourself weighing whether or not your medicine cabinet or dopp kit requires a bit of retooling; the Anthony Fresh 5 Kit is a fantastic introduction into the curious world of men’s grooming.

The Anthony Fresh 5 kit will introduce you to a few quintessential grooming products that will instantly supplant your bar soap as the king in the shower. Because, for all intents and purposes, your bar soap is probably functioning as your body wash, your shaving cream, and your shampoo. Not good. A well-groomed gentleman requires specific hygienic tools to perform specific hygienic tasks. And this brings us to the Fresh 5 kit. The standouts in the Anthony Fresh 5 Kit is definitely the facial scrub, cleanser, and moisturizer. When used in tandem, my face was left with a feeling of freshness and softness.

The facial scrub and moisturizer both had a pleasant fruity scent that lightly faded away soon after application. The scrub had a light grainy feel, but not too rough where it irritated my skin. I was surprised that the facial scrub actually produced a moderately rich lather when worked into the skin, much more so than the cleanser. The cleanser, odorless by all accounts, washed away cleanly without any evidence of residue. The same can be stated of the facial scrub. The body wash is best used with a body sponge (or loofah if you’re that particular) to maximize its lathering capabilities. It has a mild woody fragrance and the eucalyptus really does wake up the skin. The shave cream had a light lather – I wish it was a bit richer – but is did provide more than sufficient protection for my skin during shaving. All in all, this is a great starter kit to own, give as a gift, or accompany you during travel.

About Face – Rejuvenating Skincare – Filorga’s Hydra Hyal Skin Serum

FilorgaWell, a gentleman learns something new and extraordinary almost every day. Now, willingly admitting full ignorance, I was oblivious to the existence of a certain molecule that is being touted as an effective tool to wage war against aging and wrinkles. Naturally occurring within eye tissue, human skin, and connective tissues throughout the human body, this wonder compound is hyaluronic acid. Until I started this site, I truly did not afford any attention to the matter of aging skin. However, my perspective has evolved over the years, and as my years slowly advance, I am far more conscious regarding the health of my skin. Many men would shun such affectation, however, showcasing a mug like Clint Eastwood really isn’t a personal preference – a Nelson Mandela glow is more my speed.

Enter Filorga Laboratory and its newest skincare offering Hydra-Hyal. Hydra-Hyal boasts 4 types of highly concentrated hyaluronic acids that promise to replenish, hydrate, plump, and smooth the skin. Utilizing two plant-based boosters (galanga leaves and seaweed), Hydra-Hyal pledges to stimulate the production of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in the dermis and epidermis, and restore skin’s natural reserves. Formulated as a serum, as it is applied topically to the skin, the molecule also helps retain water in the skin’s surface, thus skin cells are hydrated and dryness alleviated.

The result: a supposedly rejuvenated and youthful appearance. Hydra-Hyal arrives in a cool frosted glass tube with a metallic pump top. When the top is compressed, a preset amount fills the dropper for usage. It is a small amount, but it certainly spreads generously on one’s face. The texture is slick, but not tremendously oily. It readily absorbs into the skin absent bothersome residue or film. The scent is surprisingly fresh with slight floral notes that smells great. A word of note: The serum should be utilized in conjunction with a regular moisturizer during your grooming regimen.

Product Specifications

  • Hydrating, smoothing and plumping: 4 types of hyaluronic acid deeply penetrate the skin, instantly hydrating, smoothing and plumping it.
  • Long-lasting, youth-enhancing effect: 2 plant-based boosters stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid in the dermis and epidermis in order to restore the skin’s natural reserves.
  • A radiance-boosting effect: The combination of a skin-renewal ingredient and a revitalizing NCTF© complex restore the skin’s fresh-looking, clear appearance.
  • Hydra-Hyal contains Hyaluronic Acid and NCTF®, Filorga’s proprietary technology/mesotherapy complex containing revitalizing and anti-aging ingredients, which together to stimulate the synthesis of collagen, restore the skin’s fresh-looking and clear appearance.

There is a popular saying in African-American culture that jokingly declares that “black don’t crack”. Heavily relying on the notion that our melanin shields us from harmful UV radiation, it is generally accepted that our skin ages very well. Nevertheless, some added assistance cannot hurt. Filorga’s Hydra-Hyal is worth an honest look.

Filorga’s Hydra-Hyal can be purchased on Filorga.com, select Nordstrom stores or on Nordstrom.com, for $69.00.

Gent Hints – The Office – Preparing Your Job Narrative

jobsRest assured, the cognizant gentleman fully comprehends that preparing for a job interview entails more than rudimentary touch-up of one’s resume. A gentleman needs a narrative that coincides with what your potential employer is looking for in a potential worker. Therefore, diligent preparation is paramount. Your job interview should convey a story  – your personal story. It should be a story that will compel a company to look to you as its newest, welcome addition that furthers their mission. In that interview, your presence must have a purpose. Otherwise – why are you even there? Here are a few suggestions that will help you craft a narrative that will leave an employer thoroughly impressed, and hopefully, ending with you being hired.

  • Let’s start with your resume because it is something that should not be dismissed. To be sure, correct spelling and grammar is important, however, a gentleman should have his employment history and job duties memorized. Reading off your resume verbatim will not only negate your much-needed eye contact, but it will also bore your audience and make you stand out for all the wrong reasons. If needed, quick glances should be okay, but one’s work history should be etched into your memory by now.
  • Familiarize oneself with not only the history of your potential employer, but also commit its mission and vision statement to memory. You have visited their About Page correct? If at all possible, educate yourself regarding company culture, as much as possible. Example: If the environment focuses on the team concept, but your strength is independent work, that may be a hard sale.
  • Peruse your targeted job description, focus your attention on the abilities and characteristics that the employer desires in an employee. Do you possess any of these qualities? You may not want to use the exact same words to describe yourself in your interview, so consult a thesaurus and craft your pitch as close as possible without blatant plagiarism.
  • Bear in mind, it is not enough to tout your abilities with artful adjectives. One requires concrete examples that fully and clearly illustrate your capabilities that extend beyond the well-thought words on your resume. A gentleman should enter an interview with at least 3-5 real life situations that challenged him in a fashion that showcased his problem-solving skills. I suggest you practice and commit them to memory.
  • It would be helpful if these real life situations were written down and studied. Currently employed? Even better; the challenges you face and resolve should be dutifully documented for upward job movement in your future. A mock interview with a friend can ensure that your dialogue comes across effortlessly. Preparation, preparation, and more preparation.
  • However, you don’t want to rattle off information like a robot. You want to be thoughtful in your responses. Take your time and answer questions in a measured, natural manner.
  • A gentleman should also enter an interview with examples that illustrate his initiative and how he goes beyond what is expected of him. You have to convey that you have the necessary drive to exceed expectations and not just settle for the status quo. You want to present yourself as a much-needed asset that the employer would be foolish to bypass.
  • A gentleman should enter an interview with both short and long-term goals. How do your goals align with the job description and company goals? Be prepared to answer these questions.
  • Be prepared to ask meaningful questions; questions that go beyond the requisite query regarding hours, pay, and yes – office aesthetics. Once I seriously had someone ask for a comfortable seat with good lighting preferably with a window – this was for an entry-level position. Bold, but not a good look. Company growth, opportunity for personal growth, company direction, job expectations not spelled out in the job description – these are questions that expand your conversation and demonstrate thought and character. Sure, pay and work hours count, but it shouldn’t be the first – and only – thing you address.
  • So, you may be asking: But I just applied for this job, and I don’t have sufficient enough time to prepare, what do I do? Well, try to employ as many of these points as you can, but don’t let that fact deter you from building a foundation for that next job interview.

Review – Perry Ellis- Perry Ellis Red

Perry Ellis RedContinuing with our influx of Father’s Day recommendations for select fragrances, today, Perry Ellis Red is in the spotlight for review. In my experience, Perry Ellis offers casual, sporty fragrances properly suited for relaxed daytime performance. Now, Perry Ellis Red is billed as a fresh, masculine scent that reflects a gentleman’s fearless confidence and sexy sophistication. All that being stated, let’s get to the specifics and examine how Perry Ellis Red performs.

Observations

Top Notes: Juniper Berries, Italian Bergamot, Citrus

Middle Notes: Apple, Leather, Amber, Sichuan Pepper

Base Notes: Sage, Oakmoss, Sandalwood

  • Perry Ellis Red is a casual, standard scent that forgoes complexity and instead opts for a straightforward, aggressive burst of sweetness courtesy of juniper and citrus notes. Amber assists with lending more elements of sweetness with a soft, warm delivery. This theme continues through the heart of Perry Ellis Red before it finally settles into a natural, woodsy base.
  • The woody base is just as dominant as the top and middle notes; it really is a tale of two scents as each half is fully distinguished from the other. The conclusion is remarkably robust, so a gentleman should be lenient with his initial application.
  • Now, to reiterate, Perry Ellis Red starts strong and it ends stronger. If too much is applied, the top notes can be overwhelming, as pointed out by my wife. It’s projection is wide and far. I experimented with applications for a week, and concluded that 3-4 sprays was the sweet spot to hit without the scent becoming too obnoxious. Its life is significantly long. Traces of its scent will certainly be apparent at the end of a gentleman’s day.
  • The presentation is ordinary fare for a cologne flask with the exception of a red transparent, glass middle surrounded by the flask’s black body. It’s plain, but if you are not one that places a premium on appearance, this should not be an issue.
  • As with previous experiences, Perry Ellis Red proved to be well-suited for casual environments and daytime affairs. Lively and vigorous, a gentleman can trust Red to be trusted scent that won’t lose a spot in his rotation of cologne.
  • Perry Ellis Red 3.4 oz. $65.00 – Available at Perry Ellis, Macy’s, and other fine men’s department stores

Gentlemen’s Review – Burberry – Mr. Burberry

Mr BurberryThe month of June is but a few days away, and now is as good as time as any to contemplate what type of Father’s Day gift would be great for that special gentleman. Today, up for review, is the latest offering from Burberry – Mr. Burberry. Introduced in April 2016, Mr. Burberry is the gentleman’s alternative to My Burberry. Touted as sophisticated and contemporary, Mr. Burberry is the creation of a collaborative effort between Chief Creative & Chief Executive Officer Christopher Bailey and perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. Moody and dark with a prominent presence of wood and spice, the custom monogramming is an elegant finishing touch to complete the package. Now, let’s dive into the details

Observations

Top notes: Tarragon, Grapefruit, Cardamom

Middle Notes: Cedar, Birch Leaf, Nutmeg

Base Notes: Sandalwood, Guaiac Wood, Vetiver

  • The introductory period with Mr. Burberry is a promising affair, sweet notes of grapefruit tempered by hints of nuanced bitter ones. Soon, the sweetness prevails, albeit briefly, before Mr. Burberry settles into an earthy feel that extends from the heart to the base. My sole complaint: I wish the top note lasted a little longer. This scent is properly suited for evening events.
  • Mr. Burberry can be characterized as earnest and brooding. Composed mostly of wood and spice, this is a serious fragrance suited for the professional gentleman. It does not project very far, however, it does display a concentrated intensity within a short-range. Therefore, don’t allow yourself to be influenced by the seemingly inhibited nature because it can pack a punch if applied liberally. You’ll overwhelm yourself and your immediate company.
  • The warm dry-down enjoys an extended longevity; the woody base will not abandon a gentleman for sure. The ending could benefit from the addition of a citrus or flower companion to contribute a bright contrast to the moody finale, but some gentlemen may be fine with how Mr. Burberry concludes.
  • The presentation is clean and elegant, drawing inspiration from the iconic black Burberry trench coat. Housed in blackish-grey, dense glass; Mr. Burberry is topped off (literally) by a weighted cap in reference to horn-look buttons and a hand-knotted sliver of black gabardine around the throat. It really is a handsome bottle to present on Father’s Day.
  • Mr. Burberry 30 ml ($55), 50 ml($68), 100 ml ($88), 150 ml ($115) – complimentary monogramming up to three initials at Burberry.com and select Burberry stores.
  • Available at Burberry, Nordstrom, Sephora, and other fine men’s department stores.

Review – Vince Camuto – Eterno

Vince Camuto EternoAside from a few intermittent episodes of cool temperatures as a coy reminder of winter, spring has stubbornly arrived, and a gentleman can start considering a fresh, new fragrance to welcome the season in properly. Combined with Father’s Day – fast approaching – it is certainly the perfect time for a gentleman to perform an inventory of his cologne stock and afford thoughtful deliberation regarding such an acquisition. Well, The Gentlemen’s Standard is here to assuage any worrisome, moral dilemmas one may encounter – a gentleman’s scent is serious business. Collaborating again with our friends representing Vince Camuto; its newest offering Eterno is the fourth Camuto fragrance to be offered since 2012. Past encounters with Vince Camuto fragrances have been pleasant, so the promise of sampling another beautiful fragrance is great. Now let’s see if Eterno continues the tradition.

Observations

Top Notes: Citrus, Mint

Middle Notes: Cedar Wood, Patchouli

Base Notes: Saffron, Bourbon

  • Vince Camuto Eterno commences with a warm open that exhibits remarkable restraint during its introduction. Subdued traces of citrus and mint are light and springy with an even temperament that does not overwhelm the senses.
  • The middle and base notes are deep with a strong woodsy flavor with mellow hints of spice. A gentleman can be generous with his application of Eterno without worry of offending individuals around him. Again, the overall scent is smooth and defined, as none of the notes are particularly overbearing.
  • Now, given its quiet demeanor, Eterno may be susceptible to fading into the background as a gentleman’s day progresses. Exhibiting a moderate staying power, the scent itself can get drowned out by fragrant, environmental noise. Eterno sticks with you, but only a person close enough to you will be able to appreciate its concluding notes.
  • Vince Camuto Eterno is presented once again with its signature, rectangular glass bottle, but only this time in a white version. Reminiscent of a flask, the glass bottle is encased with a white leather composite with accompanying logo embossment.
  • A gentleman will be served best when Eterno is worn during intimate affairs where the proximity of human contact is relatively small. Eterno is fresh – absent busy notes that can overwhelm and confuse. The transition between notes is clean and deliberate without any of stages overpowering the other. Eterno is definitely made for the gentleman with a relaxed lifestyle where a soft, masculine scent can be appreciated up close and personal.
  • Vince Camuto Eterno  3.4 oz $75.00 – Available at Vince Camuto, Macy’s, Dillard’s or any fine men’s department store.

Black Thought

James-Baldwin“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”

James Baldwin

The knowledgeable gentleman is reconciled with the reality that anything worth the attempt of transforming could ultimately result in failure. Nevertheless, the very real possibility of failure does not deter or dissuade him from focusing his efforts to bring about change. He understands that change is not fully realized when absent an active catalyst. Please note: Fruitful, bountiful harvests are not born to barren soil. Work must be done. And so, if a gentleman desires to see a difference, he must ultimately commit himself to making a difference. A gentleman must steel his resolve and confront what needs to be confronted, failure be damned. So, the question for you is: What do you want to see changed, and just exactly what are you doing about it?

Review -Swift & Co. – The Heritage Twist Collection

Swift Mocca BootIt is not often that a brand – largely unrecognized to the general masses here in the states –  will grab my attention and arouse curiosity. However, British footwear brand Swift & Co is such a brand. Based in East Lancashire, England; Swift & Co is an independent footwear manufacturer dating back to 1934 and spanning three generations in the Swift family. I was contacted by a Swift & Co representative a few months ago, and the pitch was too interesting to ignore. Now, the combination of my recent promotion, my wife’s pregnancy, and birth of my son has required a lot of my time, but I am now able to offer my observations. I was offered the Lancaster (pictured above), a suede lace-up boot with brogue detailing, for examination. Let’s get to it.

Swift Burgundy BootSo, what was it exactly that garnered my full, undivided attention? Well, as you perhaps identified from the accompanying visuals, the sole boasts a decidedly robust aesthetic that separates it from many footwear selections on the current market. Furthermore, the sole does not arrive with a traditional construction, with either with the sole being attached to the upper by way of chemical adhesives or the timeless Goodyear welt. The Heritage Twist collection – as named by Swift & Co – begins its life constructed inside out (with the mid-sole being stitched to the upper) and then inverted before being finished.

Now, back to that sole, continuing with its brand uniqueness, the sole is constructed with a layered interlocking sole design where the insole locks with the mid-sole. It is designed with a tight fit to discourage slippage. Honestly, the curious design would be an area of concern regarding performance. What if the sole just fell off? Would the sole be vulnerable to water penetration? With dutiful inspection, the sole appears to be attached firmly in place. I tugged and pulled, but the sole weathered my force comfortably.

I would surmise that it would take excessive wear and tear to dislodge the sole from the upper. And any concerns regarding any water penetration can be dismissed, as the inside-out construction provides full coverage all around the foot. Now, I fully understand that some gentlemen may be less than enthused about the thickness and appearance of the sole. The overall aesthetic is much a hybrid of a formal dress shoe and sneaker. Nevertheless, it is an aesthetic that can grow on you, and given the supreme overall comfort, it is something that can be overlooked.

Swift Indigo Brogue

And speaking of comfort, true to its claims, the Heritage Twist collection is truly a comfortable assembly of footwear. The insole cradles the foot with a sublime cushion that rivals the comfort of your favorite sneaker. A gentleman should not experience any issues during episodes of prolonged standing.

Specifications

  • Wisconsin suede and leather – finished in Italian tanneries
  • Sole constructed with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA); a polymer that affords flexibility, softness, and shock absorbancy
  • Sole 300% thicker than with standard footwear
  • Insole foam: 10-11 mm thick at toe, 12-13 mm thick at heel
  • Mid-sole constructed of rubber
  • Interlocking shock-absorbent sole
  • Retails $200.00 for shoes; $250.00 for boots

Notables

  • The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers Award for Innovation 2015
  • The British Footwear Association / FN Platform Award 2015
  • Two pending for construction and interlocking sole

Swift Olive BrogueIn conclusion, I found that the offering from Swift & Co to be quite distinctive in both construction and appearance. Available as a standard lace-up or Chelsea boot, the Heritage Twist collection has a modest starting lineup (with an expansion of choices in the future) for a gentleman to peruse. The hybrid of both dress and casual details afford maneuverability between casual and dress settings. The suede is suitably soft and the overall feel is lightweight, but solidly built.

Going forward, I see areas of opportunity to offer more colors and a variety of more detailing beyond the wingtip brogue. I think the collection is priced competitively in the current market, and I would definitely consider purchasing pair in a warm autumn hue – I think the suede would showcase brilliantly. I really hope Swift & Co becomes popular and captures a dedicated audience. There appears to be promise for future releases.

Style & Substance – The Leather Backpack

Shinola Leather Backpack

Shinola Runwell Backpack

The reality is inevitable; professional gentlemen of a certain age will discover themselves absent the need of certain work accoutrements. The professional employment environment eliminates the service of trusted early education essentials such as the Trapper Keeper, your dandy assortment of colorful pens & pencils, your trusted backpack, and a sturdy combination padlock to secure it all. One could safely assume that at this juncture in your career, you have introduced some serious upgrades into your work life. However, one could also safely assume that one of those upgrades does not include the bag you utilize to transport your belongings. Yes, I am referring to your backpack.

Now, regarding today’s backpack, contemporary interpretations are manufactured with luxury details and soft, supple leather. Unfortunately, some gentlemen are lumbering to and fro with their high school backpack with the specter of chronic back pain patiently waiting for its grand introduction. Personally, I am partial to briefcases. However, for the creative on the move, commuting with only his business necessities, a backpack may be a logical choice. And that choice might as well be an investment in style, sophistication, and function. Canvas or polyester options will also a command spot in the marketplace, but a leather alternative will convey character and ultimately age with a timeless grace not afforded to the former. The choice is yours, just please retire that bag from 10th grade.

A Change Gon’ Come

Miles Newborn ToesWell, if you are a follower of this blog, or perhaps you’ve landed here because of an Internet search, you will probably notice the dearth of posts. There is good reason. Aside from my preexisting fatherly duties, there have been two major changes in my life, and unsurprisingly my blogging pace has slowed tremendously. Now, allow me to address those changes. Working in the health care field since 2001; mostly recently I had transitioned to a corporate environment in supply chain management. I started as an entry-level procurement specialist, and after a few years, I secured a promotion as a senior procurement specialist. Shortly thereafter, the department experienced a lot of movement with colleagues gaining promotions or leaving for other opportunities.

Subsequently, there were several openings available as a team lead – a position in management. Before I proceed, allow me briefly explain the duties of my department. I work for a national, not-for-profit health care system. I work in the shared procurement service arm of our supply chain management. We are responsible for the procurement of goods and services for our system of hospitals. Our floor is divided into teams; each team is assigned multiple hospitals and health care facilities within specific regions. As team lead, one would be responsible for monitoring the day-to-day activities of the team, ensuring that issues regarding back-orders, discontinued items, overnight orders, complaints, etc. are addressed and resolved.

At the time, I was considered to be on the short list of candidates that would apply for one of the open positions. However, I did not feel I was ready. I decided to remain in my position and sharpen my skills. And I will readily admit, I did not fancy myself the management type. After that round of promotions, an additional team lead position became available some months later. So, I decided to venture out on faith, leave my comfort zone, and afford myself the opportunity to advance my professional career to another level. And after an intense two-week interviewing process, I was notified that the team lead position would be offered to me. Of course, I accepted without hesitation. The process was tough, but I’m glad I applied for the job.

So, that brings me to the other bit of significant news: I’m a father again. Yes, my wife and I welcomed our second child into the world last week. The journey was difficult, but our son was born happy and healthy. Oh, yes, I now have a son. He’s only a week old and I’m already thinking about teaching him how to knot his first necktie. I know – I’m terrible. So there you have it. My life has fully transformed, but for the better. Hopefully, my work and personal life will be brought into balance. I have no doubt I’ll be checking back with you to document my second round as a father and first round as part of management. And of course style and grooming will definitely be in the mix as well. Talk to you all soon.

The Standard #40

chivalrySurely, you may be familiar with the expression chivalry is dead, and furthermore, you may be familiar with the alleged reason for its demise – feminism. However, that reasoning is problematic. Quite honestly, I have the belief that this thought process is a falsehood, an excuse born out of a convenient resignation of general good manners and civility. Or perhaps it is a direct result of an unfortunate encounter with a woman that resulted in an erosion in trust and abandonment of goodwill. Nevertheless, a true gentleman recognizes that one needs not adhere to unrealistic, antiquated expectations and traditions. A true gentleman recognizes that the only standard required of a gentleman is courtesy, helpfulness, politeness, and basic human decency. Chivalry is not dead if you reject negative influences that trumpet its passing; its practice is sorely needed to foster kind, supportive engagement for both men and women. It is a practice that should be upheld and acted upon by all.

The Standard #29

MountainHumility. The act of possessing a modest opinion of one’s importance, understanding the complex context of life, and respecting the reality that other individuals may be better at some things than you. Gentlemen, please don’t be mislead by the boisterous musings of silly folk; so enamored by their own greatness that they cannot recognize their own shortcomings. Sometimes a man must recognize his faults and limitations. There is no shame in that. One must understand that embracing humility does not make a gentleman weak, actually, humility strengthens you. It keeps you grounded. It keeps you focused – on the important things in life.

It is brazen arrogance that renders a gentleman vulnerable. Trust this: Keep living and life will eventually happen to you. And life can be the greatest administrator of humility. Recognize your position in life, and even if your station ranks well above others, discipline yourself in humility, as the folly of vanity can ultimately become your undoing. You don’t want to discover this bit of wisdom the hard way, but I am sure that you won’t. Maintain the standard my friends; catch you later.

The Standard #39

CloudsSometimes success cannot be realized without the presence of adversity and hardship. To summon a gentleman’s absolute best, on occasion, his goals must be subjected to strain and threatened with the possibility of failure. Confronted with the reality of such disappointment, burdened with seemingly perpetual stress, a gentleman must call upon his courage to persevere and transform his aspirations into an actuality. To secure his accomplishments, the successful gentleman is fully cognizant of the sacrifice, discipline, and resilience required to obtain his goals. He understands that setbacks are not to be considered failures, rather they serve as moment of educational reflection to reevaluate his methodology and proceed with meeting his objectives accordingly. On his way to success, undoubtedly there will be struggle, doubt, and fear. However, his will to succeed, to bring about the best he has offer, far outweighs the specter of defeat.

A Nation of Values

waterUnrestricted by constraints of any specific time in history, the negligent pursuit for profit, unabashedly driven by parsimony, has affected individuals bearing a low socioeconomic class with an unfortunate recurring basis – and with great detriment. Perhaps consciously or subconsciously, societal marginalization has always deemed people falling on this lower socioeconomic scale as expendable. It is this tacit acceptance that fuels the unwritten belief that some lives are more disposable than others. It is what drives certain political and economic decisions, fraught with peril, that would never be acceptable with demographics that are perceived to possess a higher pedigree. With the poor, disenfranchised, and underserved; risk becomes justifiable, chance becomes standard operating procedure. Touted as a nation of values, history has repeatedly demonstrated this: The values championed by society’s chosen elite are sometimes defined by the promise of monetary reward rather than the encouragement of virtue and moral character. It is this belief that is more criminal than the unfortunate, negative consequences that arise in its wake, as it is this belief that continues the cycle of miserly apathy that deprives our underserved population of equality and fairness. This country needs to do better.
