Black Thought – Authenticity

“Authenticity is my rebellion.” – Viola Davis

Trust and be assured, you possess an extraordinary power when you hold fast to your authentic self. Emboldened with unwavering confidence and a stubborn commitment to one’s core values; you will not acquiesce or conform to either popular trends or a status quo that stand in sharp contrast to your own principles. And while being exposed to a variety of opposing, external influences; you remain unbothered and unaffected because you are rooted unmistakably in your truth. Sometimes, you boldly swim against a powerful current of popular opinion. Now, such rebellion could be met with certain labels. And that is okay. It is what defines our uniqueness. The definition of self must be written by its author. And you are the author of your own book – ghost writers need not apply. To be your true self is what grants you strength, courage, and drive. Absent hesitation, regret, or embarrassment; your rebellion is your originality. Trust and be assured, your authenticity is unapologetically you and only you.

The Standard #54

To be absolutely certain, the emotional and mental anguish is undeniable. And sometimes the anguish manifests itself physically – scars indelibly, indiscriminately tattooing the body. It is a pain that enjoys a perpetual downpour of torrential hate; roots strengthening its grasp within the fertile soil of the human spirit, rendering it barren of dignity or hope. Starved of equality and justice, our humanity has become emaciated from being forcibly fed prejudice, privilege, and hate. To be absolutely certain, it is an exhausting exercise of suffering. However, we should never allow ourselves to become so starved for justice and equality that we become equal participants in the deprivation of our own humanity. The oppressed should never adopt the identity or ideology of the oppressor. We should never debase our ethics and morality to achieve a perceived modicum of equal footing. Because, once that choice is made, the reason behind the mission is compromised. To be unambiguous, we should never acquiesce to indignant ignorance, idiocy, and ill will. The expectation is daunting, and honestly, the burden of righteousness and virtue should not lie with the persecuted. Yet, I call upon you to stand fierce in righteousness, honor, and goodness. Do not be mistaken, moral strength and conviction can be righteously weaponized to strike down animus, and dismantle systemic injustice that is intentionally injurious to the under-served and disenfranchised. Hold firm to your integrity and values, as our will must be stronger than the status quo of moral corruption, we stand steadfast and will overcome.

Burdened with life’s offering of challenges and adversity, a wise gentleman understands that his resolve and fortitude will be subjected to an indiscriminate, unrelenting pressure. Trialed and tested, a wise gentleman also understands that a continuous cascade of adverse circumstances can simultaneously harden and weaken his spirit. Deprived of the necessary mental strength and stamina to endure life’s difficult moments; he slowly becomes steeled with cynicism, pessimism, and anger. The overwhelming urge to yield under the constant strain of life is a viable option that offers welcome relief; relief from an existence constructed of weariness and tumult.

However, this gentleman is empowered with the knowledge that he is not the sole proprietor of stress and pain. And comforted with said knowledge, he comprehends that a support network exists that only needs accessing. Sometimes comfort arrives in the form of a compassionate, welcome listener and alternate perspective. And hopefully, this combination offers positive clarity that refreshes a gentleman’s mental faculties. Please, understand, you are never alone in your troubles; one only needs to reach out and seek positive counsel. Trust, someone is experiencing or has experienced what you are enduring. They are awaiting your call. Don’t delay your call for help.
