Gentlemen’s Review – Harry’s – Harry’s Bar Soap

Life has been so surreal. At the start of the new year, I decided to slow my pace of writing. Previously, last autumn, I had decided to ramp up my blogging after months of intermittent activity. So I started fast and furious, but I needed to find some balance. There was absolutely no way, given the array of daily responsibilities, that I could maintain a writing pace that echoed my initial years of blogging. So I pumped the brakes. And then all hell broke loose in the form of a novel coronavirus and subsequent disease COVID-19. Everything was turned upon its head. I stopped blogging briefly. Life has been an adjustment. My employment is essential, and thankfully, I am able to work at home. My wife is in a similar position. School is canceled. So, we’re all sheltering in place at home. And of course, Michigan weather, as per normal, decided to dip into the high 30s with the occasional snow flurry in April. It has been hectic and challenging. Nevertheless, we are making it work the best that we can at the moment. And so, I am trying to incorporate a little normalcy back into my life by writing again.

So, gentlemen, let us talk about body bar soap. Weird timing right? Nonetheless, I’ve had this soap for weeks now, so now appeared to be a good time for a review. Now, many of you might be familiar with the brand Harry’s because of their shaving products. Well, for a few years now, you might have noticed that their line of gentleman’s grooming products has expanded beyond razors and shave cream. Bar soap and body washes are now a component of their grooming & hygiene catalog. During one of my supply runs to Target, I purchased a few bars out of curiosity. Given the price, it seems to be targeted toward the average gentleman that can appreciate finer grooming products but does not want to spend an exorbitant amount of money on said finer product. How does Harry’s bar soap perform? Please continue reading below.

Observations

  • The offering from Harry’s in the bar soap market is very impressive. It is just as thick and robust as its luxury counterparts – clocking in at 5.0 ounces – at only a fraction of the cost of more expensive options. At a local retailer, a gentleman can expect to pay approximately $3.99 per bar soap. Sure, standard multi-box options (Dove, Lever 2000, Zest, etc.) will present more affordability. However, Harry’s bar soap strikes a sweet spot between budget and luxury.
  • In regards to my experience with expensive bar soaps, I have noticed that the lather is noticeably thicker than budget options. With Harry’s, despite the lower cost compared to high-end brands, the integrity of its lather is not sacrificed. The production of the lather is swift and considerably rich. A few rotations in your washcloth with some water will produce the desired results. One good lather will last the entirety of a shower. The bar soap itself has a soft, milky texture when exposed to water. The overall washing experience is pleasant.
  • Granted everyday usage, a single bar should endure for the length of an entire month. After a week of use, I could still discern “Harry’s” etched across the soap. There is a slight drying effect, so a gentleman should employ a good body lotion after showering.
  • Harry’s bar soap is truly formulated to use on your body. Trust me, the scent is fantastic. However, as it is refreshing and energetic, it is definitely too strong to use on your face. And as strong as the scent presents itself; it washes away cleanly as a gentleman rinses and exits the shower. So you need not worry about any strong lingering scents that might clash with your favorite cologne.
  • Harry’s bar soap is aimed at the average gentleman that doesn’t visit high-end retail locations regularly but desires an above-average showering experience. Harry’s bar soap delivers that experience at a fraction of the cost of more expensive options. A gentleman can expect to extract service for nearly a month before reloading with a new bar. Minimal water is required to generate a thick, generous lather. It removes dirt well with minimal dryness that can be resolved with a good body moisturizer.
  •  Harry’s bar soap retails for approximately $3.99 for a 5.0-ounce body bar. Harry’s website does offer a value, variety pack of 4 bars; thus slightly reducing the price to $3.75 per bar. Available scents: Stone, Fig, Shiso, and Redwood.

Standard Recommendations – Anthony New York – Anthony Fresh 5

Anthony Fresh 5If your grooming regimen closely resembles my grooming regimen from approximately 10 years ago, you would probably agree it consists of the basics: soap, water, and body lotion. In my early 30s, I resolved myself to allocating the proper attention to my standard grooming routine and introducing a few upgrades to my bathroom flow. Moisturizers, exfoliating scrubs, cleansers balms, etc. were all married into my newly established lifestyle of hygienic care. Now, if you find yourself weighing whether or not your medicine cabinet or dopp kit requires a bit of retooling; the Anthony Fresh 5 Kit is a fantastic introduction into the curious world of men’s grooming.

The Anthony Fresh 5 kit will introduce you to a few quintessential grooming products that will instantly supplant your bar soap as the king in the shower. Because, for all intents and purposes, your bar soap is probably functioning as your body wash, your shaving cream, and your shampoo. Not good. A well-groomed gentleman requires specific hygienic tools to perform specific hygienic tasks. And this brings us to the Fresh 5 kit. The standouts in the Anthony Fresh 5 Kit is definitely the facial scrub, cleanser, and moisturizer. When used in tandem, my face was left with a feeling of freshness and softness.

The facial scrub and moisturizer both had a pleasant fruity scent that lightly faded away soon after application. The scrub had a light grainy feel, but not too rough where it irritated my skin. I was surprised that the facial scrub actually produced a moderately rich lather when worked into the skin, much more so than the cleanser. The cleanser, odorless by all accounts, washed away cleanly without any evidence of residue. The same can be stated of the facial scrub. The body wash is best used with a body sponge (or loofah if you’re that particular) to maximize its lathering capabilities. It has a mild woody fragrance and the eucalyptus really does wake up the skin. The shave cream had a light lather – I wish it was a bit richer – but is did provide more than sufficient protection for my skin during shaving. All in all, this is a great starter kit to own, give as a gift, or accompany you during travel.

About Face – Rejuvenating Skincare – Filorga’s Hydra Hyal Skin Serum

FilorgaWell, a gentleman learns something new and extraordinary almost every day. Now, willingly admitting full ignorance, I was oblivious to the existence of a certain molecule that is being touted as an effective tool to wage war against aging and wrinkles. Naturally occurring within eye tissue, human skin, and connective tissues throughout the human body, this wonder compound is hyaluronic acid. Until I started this site, I truly did not afford any attention to the matter of aging skin. However, my perspective has evolved over the years, and as my years slowly advance, I am far more conscious regarding the health of my skin. Many men would shun such affectation, however, showcasing a mug like Clint Eastwood really isn’t a personal preference – a Nelson Mandela glow is more my speed.

Enter Filorga Laboratory and its newest skincare offering Hydra-Hyal. Hydra-Hyal boasts 4 types of highly concentrated hyaluronic acids that promise to replenish, hydrate, plump, and smooth the skin. Utilizing two plant-based boosters (galanga leaves and seaweed), Hydra-Hyal pledges to stimulate the production of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in the dermis and epidermis, and restore skin’s natural reserves. Formulated as a serum, as it is applied topically to the skin, the molecule also helps retain water in the skin’s surface, thus skin cells are hydrated and dryness alleviated.

The result: a supposedly rejuvenated and youthful appearance. Hydra-Hyal arrives in a cool frosted glass tube with a metallic pump top. When the top is compressed, a preset amount fills the dropper for usage. It is a small amount, but it certainly spreads generously on one’s face. The texture is slick, but not tremendously oily. It readily absorbs into the skin absent bothersome residue or film. The scent is surprisingly fresh with slight floral notes that smells great. A word of note: The serum should be utilized in conjunction with a regular moisturizer during your grooming regimen.

Product Specifications

  • Hydrating, smoothing and plumping: 4 types of hyaluronic acid deeply penetrate the skin, instantly hydrating, smoothing and plumping it.
  • Long-lasting, youth-enhancing effect: 2 plant-based boosters stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid in the dermis and epidermis in order to restore the skin’s natural reserves.
  • A radiance-boosting effect: The combination of a skin-renewal ingredient and a revitalizing NCTF© complex restore the skin’s fresh-looking, clear appearance.
  • Hydra-Hyal contains Hyaluronic Acid and NCTF®, Filorga’s proprietary technology/mesotherapy complex containing revitalizing and anti-aging ingredients, which together to stimulate the synthesis of collagen, restore the skin’s fresh-looking and clear appearance.

There is a popular saying in African-American culture that jokingly declares that “black don’t crack”. Heavily relying on the notion that our melanin shields us from harmful UV radiation, it is generally accepted that our skin ages very well. Nevertheless, some added assistance cannot hurt. Filorga’s Hydra-Hyal is worth an honest look.

Filorga’s Hydra-Hyal can be purchased on Filorga.com, select Nordstrom stores or on Nordstrom.com, for $69.00.

Gentlemen’s Review – Lab Series – Age Rescue + Water Charged Gel Cream

Lab Series Anti-ageMy face is gearing up for a long battle. It is with great stubbornness, accentuated with a modest air of melancholy, that I have accepted the reality of sleep-reduced days for the forseeable future. Factoring in the looming onslaught of dry, cool air the winter season will provide; my face is at a decided disadvantage. Recognizing my skin required an equalizer, I anxiously jumped at the chance to sample Lab Series’ Age Rescue + Water-Charged Gel Cream. With wrinkles and dry skin a distinct possibility, there is no shame in my game when it involves grooming nowadays. If you are a gentleman of a certain age, baby or no baby, polar vortex or no polar vortex, it is never a bad idea to pamper oneself with products that afford the hope of beating back Father Time. So, how does Lab Series Age Rescue + Water-Charged Gel measure up? Let’s dive in gentlemen.

Observations

  • With an unusual bluish-green tint, the contents arrive with a refreshingly clean scent. The texture has a light to medium consistency with a moderately greasy touch. If your skin has the tendency to be oily, I would proceed with caution if using this product. Obtaining a sample would be wise before committing to a full jar.
  • Given its slightly oily feel, a gentleman will notice a residual touch on his face a little longer after initial application. It did not bother me, but keep this tidbit in mind if you plan on purchasing a jar.
  • Absorption, however, is an easy transition into the skin as the cream goes on evenly and smoothly.
  • A gentleman can either use his cream as generously or sparingly as he deems necessary. The cream really distributes well, so a few dabs on the fingertips should suffice.
  • Instantly, the hydrating effects can be felt within your skin as a cooling sensation sweeps across the face.
  • Ringing in at hefty $50.00 per jar, it may be hard for a gentleman to commit to such an expensive moisturizer. Therefore, depending on your needs and lifestyle, the decision is ultimately your own. Truthfully, even when using everyday, a gentleman should be able to extract 2 months of usage from a single jar.
  • Available sizes: 1.7 oz ($50.00)

Gentlemen’s Review – Jack Black – Beard Lube & Conditioning Shave

Jack Black Beard LubeToday, we are discussing every gentleman’s favorite bathroom grooming ritual – shaving. And on deck we have the Jack Black Beard Lube being examined. Spanning the duration of this website, I have been granted the privilege of documenting my grooming escapades with a variety of skincare products, and this perhaps ranks as the most interesting to date. When preparing for a traditional shave, a gentleman is usually armed with three grooming products – aside from his trusty razor – that he employs during his shaving regimen: pre-shave oil, shave cream, and a post-shave soothing agent for the skin.

The Jack Black Beard Lube combines all three grooming entities into one tube to cover all the bases a gentleman requires when taking a sharp blade to face. The beard lube is indeed interesting. I am generally accustomed to a shave gel with a decent enough lather to provide not only sufficient comfort to my skin, but also a mental comfort of knowing the blade will glide across my throat absent the threat of severing my carotid artery. Now, since you are reading this post today, I obviously did not slit my throat using the Jack Black Beard Lube. Nevertheless, that does not speak to actual shaving performance. So, without any further delay, let’s dive into my observations and thoughts on this highly unique shaving product.

Observations

  • The beard lube retains a light, creamy texture as it emerges from its dark blue tube.
  • Immediately, you will discover that this particular shave cream does not lather like any previous shaving cream you have employed. Now, the product may appear to be creamy when you squeeze it out of the tube, but it is a little oily when you rub it on the skin.
  • Despite the noticeable absence of a rich lather, the cream is still visible enough on the skin, so re-application isn’t necessary if you feel you’ve missed a spot. It doesn’t dry out as some shave gels have the reputation to do, so again, repeated applications is not needed.
  • A jelly bean sized amount on the fingertip is sufficient enough to cover perhaps a 1-2 inch radius on the skin. Of course, this is all dependant upon how much you prefer to use.
  • The shave itself is smooth. Again, mentally, you will have to adjust to not seeing your face lathered up. Nevertheless, the oils assist the razor in moving gently across the skin with no snags or tugs. For thicker beards, I would definitely suggest using an electric razor to plow through your facial wilderness before trying to shave any closer. I say that because the tube is relatively small and the retail price is expensive. So, you don’t want to liberally use the shave cream unnecessarily.
  • Post shave: the skin is left refreshingly soft and smooth. No irritation. No blood. No burn. It should be noted that this product has macadamia nut oil as an ingredient. I am allergic to nuts, but I did not have any adverse effects. However, this is just my experience. If you have a severe nut allergy, proceed with caution.
  • Available sizes: 3 oz ($11.00), 6 oz ($17.00), 16 oz ($33.00)
  • The only drawback would be the price. Honestly, it is a great shave cream. And given that it is essential 3 product combined into 1, a gentleman may be receiving a bargain. Nevertheless, if you are shaving 3-4 times per week, you might run the risk of blowing through a few tubes a month. And that can add up quickly. So, if you have the disposable income to enjoy such a luxury, I would definitely recommend this product. If you are a gentleman with a moderate revenue stream, purchase this for yourself during those special times when you want to treat yourself.

Beard Lube – Conditioning Shave with Jojoba & Eucalyptus

An entirely new way to shave. Unlike traditional shaving foams and gels which can dry out skin, our award-winning Beard Lube® is a pre-shave oil, shave cream and facial skin treatment in one easy-to-use product specially formulated for men’s shaving needs.

The unique formula contains phospholipids – a rich source of essential fatty acids that are essential to the function of cell membranes – to bind moisture to the skin and support the natural skin barrier. The lightweight, penetrating formula not only helps prepare your beard by penetrating and softening whisker growth, it holds in moisture so your shaving blade glides easily. Refreshes skin, too, for an easier, smoother shave and less razor burn.

The unique see-through texture lets you see where you’re shaving, helping to prevent nicks and cuts–especially great for shaving side burns, moustache and head. Won’t clog your blade, because it is super light and rinses easily.

Key Ingredients

  • Macadamia Nut Oil, Jojoba Oil and Glycerin provide a lubricating, protective cushion.
