  • First Team football All-American Rutgers University 1917-18
  • Earned 15 letters in 4 varsity sports
  • Member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity
  • Bachelor of Laws from Columbia University in 1922
  • Film – Body & Soul – 1925
  • Film – The Emperor Jones – 1933
  • Musical – Showboat – 1936
  • Film – Song of Freedom – 1936
  • Play – Othello – 1943
  • NAACP Spingarn Medal – 1945
  • Published biography, Here I Stand in 1958
  • Died at the age of 77 on January 23rd, 1976
